FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions

What is a short haul move?
This is a move that is less than 450 miles. Make sure to inquire with your moving company as you may have to pay long distance charges even for short haul moves.

What is a local move?
This usually refers to moves that are less than 100 miles and within the same state.

What is an intrastate move?
This refers to a move of more than 100 miles within the same state.

What should I do if I haven’t finished packing by my moving day?
If you realized you won’t be finished packing by your move date, make sure to inform your moving company as soon as possible. You may be able to hire professional packers to help you finish the job or move on a different date. Your movers may be able to pack up a small amount of items, but you will end up paying more for the move.

How should I file a complaint with my moving company if there is a problem?
We recommend contacting your moving company immediately to discuss the situation and try to resolve the problem. If the issue isn’t resolved properly, you can file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, Federal Trade Commission Bureau of Consumer Protection, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration or the National Association of Attorneys General.

What are the options for coverage of any lost or damaged items during transit?
You can choose your type and level of protection from the following: cash value liability, full replacement liability or weight based liability.

Do I need to provide lunch for my movers?
Your moving professionals will need to eat at some point during the day. You don’t need to provide lunch, although doing so will reduce the time they require to drive to and from a local restaurant which will save you money.

Can I still move in poor weather?
Yes, professional movers are prepared to move in almost any condition including sleet, snow or rain. Just make sure you clear the driveway beforehand if you are moving in snowy conditions.

Should I store items that won’t fit in my new home?
You can choose to store items that won’t fit. However, if you have items that are old or have little value, you may be better to sell or donate them instead of paying the high cost of storing them for a long period.

What is hoisting?
Certain large awkward items such as wall units or pianos may have to be hoisted out of a window instead of being carried down a flight of stairs. Check with your moving company about the availability and cost of this service.

What is overflow?
?Movers may have to leave some of your belongings behind if there is insufficient space in the moving van or truck. If this is the case, make sure to leave the least essential items for the next truck that will be heading to your area. ?

What should I do with my plants?
We recommend that you move your plants yourself as they can suffer from a lack of light and water and temperature extremes in the truck. Please note that some countries will not allow the import of plants or other agricultural items if you’re planning an overseas move.

What is a full service move?
This is the most common type of move where your moving company will transport all of your household goods to your new destination. They will be loaded from every room of your current residence and placed in the rooms of your new home. Individual pieces of furniture are also wrapped in blankets for protection during the move.
